Croatian Passport Ranking: How Strong Is It?
Ranking reference checked: . The figures below are a dated reference, not a live travel advisory.
The Henley Passport Index figures referenced in this update place the Croatian passport in joint 8th position, with a travel-access score of 182 destinations.
That is a measure of short-stay travel access. It is not a measure of where a passport holder may settle permanently, take employment or claim public benefits.
This guide explains the Croatian passport ranking, how to interpret its visa-free score and why the rights associated with Croatian citizenship go beyond a position on a ranking table.
Croatian Passport Ranking at a Glance
| Passport | Rank | Destination score |
|---|---|---|
| Croatia | 8th | 182 |
| United States | 10th | 180 |
Passports with the same score share a rank. Eighth place therefore does not mean that only seven individual passports are ahead of Croatia.
Henley covers 199 passports and 227 destinations, using IATA travel data supplemented by its own research. Its published index is updated monthly.
What Does “182 Destinations” Mean?
Henley’s score includes eligible short visits using:
- Visa-free entry: no visa is required for the relevant visit.
- Visa on arrival: the visa can be obtained at the destination without prior approval.
- Electronic travel authorization: an ETA may still have to be obtained before travel.
Henley treats an ETA differently from an e-visa requiring pre-departure approval; the latter does not count toward its visa-free score.
The index counts destinations, including territories, rather than only sovereign countries. Its assumptions concern ordinary passports and short visits, not unrestricted entry for any purpose.
Visa-free does not mean requirement-free. Check passport validity, permitted activities, length of stay and any required authorization with the destination’s official authorities before booking.
Have Croatian Ancestry?
The passport ranking explains travel access. The next question is whether your own family history supports a Croatian citizenship application.
Start with your connection to the Croatian parent or ancestor and the records you already have. A complete file is not required to make an enquiry.
Is the Croatian Passport Stronger Than the US Passport?
It ranks higher on the Henley figures used in this guide. Croatia’s score exceeds the US score by two destinations.
A larger total does not show which permissions matter for your journey, or mean one passport covers every destination available to the other. Compare your actual destinations rather than treating a small numerical gap as the whole decision.

Why Do Passport Rankings Change?
A rank is relative to other passports. Changes in other passports’ scores can affect a country’s position even if its own travel access is unchanged.
When comparing two articles, check the index name, reference date and score. Different dates or methodologies can produce different results. A number without its source and date is not a reliable comparison.
For travel planning, check the destination’s current entry rules as well as the ranking. Neither this article nor the index substitutes for the rules applicable to your trip.
Croatian Passport Benefits Beyond the Ranking
Croatian citizens are also EU citizens. EU citizenship rights are separate from Henley’s travel-access calculation.
Living, Working and Studying in the EU
EU citizens have rights to move to another EU country to work, study, look for employment or retire, under the applicable conditions. Residence registration and other formalities may still apply.
These rights can be more relevant to a relocation plan than a difference of a few destinations in a short-stay travel ranking.
Practical Requirements Still Matter
A passport does not automatically enroll you in another country’s health system. Health coverage depends on circumstances including residence, work and insurance. Likewise, review the relevant requirements before making family, education or relocation arrangements.
The useful distinction is travel access versus citizenship rights. Keep both in view when evaluating what Croatian citizenship could mean for your plans.
Can Croatian Ancestry Lead to a Croatian Passport?
Potentially, but eligibility must be established first. A parent-based case, an application through a qualifying emigrant ancestor and a case involving Croatian affiliation can require different evidence and procedures.
A Croatian surname or an ancestor’s birthplace alone should not be treated as guaranteed eligibility. Read our Croatian citizenship by descent guide for the main questions to check.
Citizenship and passport issuance are separate stages. After citizenship has been acquired or confirmed and the necessary registrations completed, a passport application follows the relevant procedure. Already a citizen? See how to apply for a Croatian passport after citizenship.

Frequently Asked Questions
How strong is the Croatian passport in 2026?
The Henley reference checked for this update places Croatia joint 8th with a score of 182 destinations. Consult the dated comparison above rather than assuming the ranking stays the same throughout the year.
Can I travel without any advance paperwork?
Not necessarily. A destination counted in the score may still require an electronic travel authorization. Confirm the requirements for your specific trip before departure.
Does a higher rank give me more EU residence rights?
No. EU citizenship rights do not increase or decrease with a passport’s position in the Henley index. They arise under the applicable EU legal framework.
Can I get the passport directly through a grandparent?
First establish whether you qualify for Croatian citizenship or already hold it. A grandparent’s documents may support that assessment, but they do not replace your own citizenship status or the separate passport application.
